Seven Deadly Fins of Cinema

The 7 Deadly Fins of Cinema was inspired by the deadly sins project & my love for cinema. I decided to use my favorite monster movies for this project, and only monsters that have fins. I decided to use watercolor because of the uniqueness that it gives and hand brush ink for the type treatment to make the whole series a more handmade style. I didn't want to give away the movie titles so easily and so instead, I pulled quotes from the movie makes it more unique.
  • Jaws, Great White Shark, “Smile, You Son of a Bitch!"
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Creature, “Even I, Lucas, have heard the Legend of a man fish."
  • Godzilla, Kaiju, “We need... Bigger Guns."
  • Pacific Rim, Kaiju, "Let's Get this Bastard."
  • Open Water, Sharks, “I wander if it works?"
  • Clash of the Titans, Kraken, "Release the Kraken.”
  • Star Wars IV: The Phantom Menace, Sando Aqua Monster from Naboo, “There’s Always a Bigger Fish."

Personal Creative Projects

For the personal project, I wanted to do something that gives back to the community. I think it fits personality pretty well as I liked to help other people. So I decided to make a promotional video for our annual graphic design club field trip. And I also wanted to see where I'm at as a cinematographer since I'm thinking of going that direction after graduation.

Challenges: unfamiliar place, new tools, & time limit.
City: New York
Tools: Sony A7S
Time: 4 days & 4 nights

Although I've been to New York several times prior to the design trip, I think my perspective of the city is a forever changing process. There are so many things to see and do, New York is not just a place of business, its filled with beautiful architecture, interesting people and diverse culinary cultures. I had a blast during last year's trip, shuffling between the streets of New York and learning the various job opportunities out there. I think it will be unique to document the trip using the studio visits combine with the scenery and happenings to show what we did and the excitement behind it all.

For the camera, I decided to go with the Sony A7S, which is known for its good low light sensibility and the XAVC-S codec to allowed better datas for post-editing. The new camera allows to test where I am at as a photographer and cinematographer. Post-editing helps me see how far I’ve become after this past year in learning the programs.

Without the help of fundraising and poster sales, it wouldn’t have been possible for all of us to go out there. In doing this video, our donors will see what we did on our trip and the expectance of the trip itself. I hope the video can be use in the future to help gather fundings and interest other students in going to this trip. It was definitely an eye-opening experience for me and I believe it will benefit our student designers and our school’s presence in the design field.

What Drives Hu PromaxBDA Student Challenge

For the Promax BDA student challenge, I looked at the thing that I’m inspired by as designers. After a long evaluation, I realize I’m really drawn by the everyday details in life. As designers, we have a heighten case of senses and we’re constantly exposed to these senses in our daily routine as designers.

For the video, I decided to use after effects since I want to get more exposure to motion graphics and learn more about the production side. I decided to use Matt Stanfield’s song called Lost and Found because of the different tonality and the way the music evokes. To make the motion more natural and personal, I decided to use different sound effects.

I wanted the video to be more of a inspiring piece, I wanted to make it more effective by playing with positive and negative space. With all the sound effects, music and motion, I decided to use a simplify script so its not too busy and helps get the  point across.
